De hazelaar (Corylus avellana) is een in West-Europa autochtone heester uit de berkenfamilie (Betulaceae). De hazelaar is net als de forsythia een "naaktbloeier": de plant bloeit als deze nog geen bladeren heeft en is voor de bestuiving afhankelijk van de wind. Aan de hazelaar zitten de mannelijke en de vrouwelijke bloeiwijzen apart. De mannelijke bloemen zitten in katjes en zijn al in de zomer aanwezig in de oksels van de bladeren. Ze gaan pas bloeien in januari. De vrouwelijke bloemen zitten met drie tot vier stuks in een klein knopje bij elkaar. Tijdens de bloei zijn alleen de rode stijlen met de stempels te zien. De hazelaar wordt tot 6 m hoog en gaat pas na tien jaar vrucht dragen. The Common Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a species of hazel native to Europe and western Asia, from the British Isles south to Iberia, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, north to central Scandinavia, and east to the central Ural Mountains, the Caucasus, and northwestern Iran. It is an important component of the hedgerows that were the traditional field boundaries in lowland England. The wood was traditionally grown as coppice, the poles cut being used for wattle-and-daub building and agricultural fencing. Common Hazel is cultivated for its nuts. The name hazelnut applies to the nuts of any of the species of the genus Corylus. This hazelnut or cob nut, the kernel of the seed, is edible and used raw or roasted, or ground into a paste.
