Artemia behoren tot de pekelkreeftjes en worden heel vaak verkocht als cysten of adulten, als voedsel in de aquacultuur. Het zijn zeer oude dieren en zouden de laatste 100 miljoen jaar amper gewijzigd zijn qua bouwplan; Artemia salina is a species of brine shrimp – primitive, aquatic crustaceans that are more closely related to Triops and cladocerans than to true shrimp. It is a very old species that does not appear to have changed in 100 million years. Artemia are popular in the USA, UK and other countries as pets for children, sold as "Sea Monkeys" and distributed in the dormant cyst state for aquaculture.
