Weinig bosvogels zijn zo impressionant als het auerhoen. In centraal Europa gaan ze overal achteruit door wijzigingen in het klimaat en hoge jachtdruk, maar in Scandinavië kan je ze nog gemakkelijker zien. De balts is fantastisch, dan lopend de mannetjes al roepend door het bos, met de staart gespreid; Capercaillies are declining in central Europe due to climate change combined with hunting pressure.
