Niels Kooyman was raised in Bergen, a Dutch coastal village surrounded by nature and known for its vibrant art community. This setting undoubtedly influenced his vision on nature and photography. While conducting research on the effect of grazing by large herbivores on the vegetation in several wetlands ‒ meanwhile educated as a wildlife conservationist ‒ he became more and more serious and professional about wildlife photography. After working as an image editor and staff photographer for a consulting firm he launched his freelance photography career in 2006.
