Biography
Gerrit van Ommering (Leiden, 1954) is biologist, botanist, birdwatcher, photographer, writer, traveller and musician. Untill 2014 he worked at the department of Economic Affairs at the Department of Nature and Biodiversity, with as main subject a.o. National Parks and National Landscapes. The coastal sand dunes are his favourite Dutch landscape, because of their naturalness, variety and huge species richness. Gerrit takes many photographs in the coastal dune area of Berkheide (where he's also busy monitoring birds and plants) and elsewhere in and around his present residence Wassenaar, where one can find half of the Dutch plant species. His dedication to his residence is equalled by his insatiable desire to travel around the world: He wants to experience and photograph "all nice places on earth", which turns out te be a rather ambitious plan and a lot of work. Gerrit visited already many interesting places in more than 100 countries but he will, so he's afraid, not be able to visit all places he wants to. That's an alarming as well as a reassuring thought. With his Dutch photo's Gerrit specialises mainly in plants. His pursuit is as simple as ambitious: making nice pictures of all species of plants in the Netherlands. He aims at photo's of species in their natural habitat, but he makes also "posed portraits" and abstract compositions. Gerrit loves close ups, which gives one more insight in the character of each species and individual. Furthermore sand and frost are rewarding subjects.
Abroad Gerrit is dedicated to landscapes. His general motto is the (poets version of a) typical Dutch expression: look once, look twice, only then the picture will be nice.
